NIGERIAN defender David Oniya has suffered a fatal heart attack while playing in a friendly match for Malaysian Premier League side T-Team against Kelantan in Kota Bharu.
Oniya allegedly collapsed after just three minutes of play.
T-Team CEO Syahrizan Mohd Zain said the 30-year-old had barely been involved in the game before he collapsed.
“There was no hard running and it was a slow tempo match. It’s only a friendly game,” Syahrizan said.
“The match was called off in the 60th minute when we received a call from the hospital that Oniya had died.”
The club has complained that Oniya’s life may have been saved had emergency services responded more rapidly as soon as the player lost consciousness.
“He suffered a heart attack but it could have been a different story had the ambulance driver (been) alert. The driver was at the stands watching the game when Oniya suddenly collapsed and our defender was deprived of oxygen for several minutes,” Syahrizan said.
Prior to playing for T-Team, Oniya had spent five seasons playing for Uzbek club FC Dinamo Samarqand, as well as playing for three other sides in Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan spanning a 10-year-long professional football career.
