Chile draw with Mexico in six-goal Copa América thriller

Chile’s Arturo Vidal, right, celebrates after scoring with his team-mate Eduardo Vargas during a Copa América Group A clash with Mexico

Arturo Vidal scored two goals and set up another, but hosts Chile were held to a 3-3 draw by Mexico in a thrilling Copa America match on Monday.

Striker Vicente Vuoso scored twice for Mexico, including the 66th-minute equaliser that frustrated the home crowd.

Fans were also upset after two Chile goals were ruled out for offside.

Despite the setback Chile leads Group A with four points along with Bolivia who beat Ecuador 3-2 earlier.

Mexico has two points after two draws, while pointless Ecuador are last.

Chile, seeking their first Copa America title, are ahead of Bolivia on goal difference.

A victory would have been enough to secure the hosts a spot in the quarter-finals of the South American tournament.

Earlier Bolivia clinched their first Copa America victory since 1997 when they upset Ecuador.

The Bolivians, who had not won a competitive game on foreign soil since 1995, withstood a furious second-half fightback from Ecuador to leave their opponents on the brink of elimination.

Bolivia assured themselves of victory in the opening 45 minutes, punishing a series of mistakes by Ecuador to race into a 3-0 lead.

But Ecuador fought back with two goals to make for a frantic final period.
